I'm curious.  What kind of a site would be helpful for people new to 
telephony and asterisk?

The Wiki is nice, but there's a lot of noise in there, and you have to
know what you're looking for.  My thoughts would be:

- Walkthrough of telecom and VoIP terms and concepts
- Basic installation of *
- Walk throughs for various scenarios, ie autoattendent, SIP connections, 
home PBX, etc
- Configuration advice/standards (ie "Best Practices")
- Guerrilla * - adjuncts for existing PBXes
- Links to other sites
