Two other notes:

1) If you're going to download a Ubuntu image, download the "alternate" cd's,
not the bootable desktop ones, as these are properly set up to be used as a
deb-cd repository.
2) Keep in mind that when rebuilding a package, it's easy to take care of all
the build deps in one command:

apt-get build-dep <package-name>
