You can always download and compile GNU tar on Solaris if you need it. I had to do that once some years back because of some Solaris bug that prevented me from untaring. It only takes a few minutes and saves a lot of time in the long run trying to figure out the Solaris tar equivalents of the GNU tar commands you're used to. John
