Mel ... look into specifying to start another x server such as:


startx -- :1 vt04 &

which will start on vt04 ... you can press CTRL-ALT-F4 to get to that vt

I only leave 2 tty's and my X session open on vt03, so on my system, 04 
is next.  You can even play around with other window managers this way 
as well ...
