You may see it in your lifetime.  The IETF JMAP group is hard at work, nearing final standard.  JMAP is the intended replacement for IMAP, and has explicit provision for replacing (or rendering unnecessary) SMTP too.  And JMAP fully supports labels (a la Gmail), not just in the e-mail message base, but in contacts, etc., too (a contact can belong to many "labels"/groups), basically, wherever the labels concept makes sense.

I am happily using Fastmail, the world's showcase implementation of JMAP.  Gmail (with my own domain names) was my former primary infrastructure, and I am still maintaining it for experiments/education.  I just did some fresh DKIM research in Gmail recently.
